What is Selenium? Optimal Ranges & Function

Optimal Range:100-130 µg/L
What is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that functions as a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases). It plays a key role in thyroid hormone metabolism, immune defense, and protecting cells from oxidative damage.
Why Selenium Matters
Adequate selenium supports thyroid function, immune resilience, and protects against oxidative stress. Both deficiency and excess can be harmful — deficiency is linked to increased cardiovascular risk and weakened immunity, while excess can cause selenosis.
Symptoms of Low Selenium
- Fatigue
- Weakened immune function
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Cognitive decline
- Muscle weakness
- Hair loss
Symptoms of High Selenium
- Garlic breath odor
- Nail brittleness
- Nausea
- Skin rashes
- Irritability
- Nervous system issues
