What is IL-6 (Interleukin-6)? Optimal Ranges & Function
Normal Range:0-5 pg/mL
Optimal Range:0-1.5 pg/mL
What is IL-6 (Interleukin-6)?
A cytokine produced by immune cells that plays a dual role in inflammation—both promoting and resolving inflammatory responses. It's one of the first responders to infection and tissue damage.
Why IL-6 (Interleukin-6) Matters
Chronically elevated IL-6 is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality and biological aging. Unlike CRP (which IL-6 triggers), IL-6 directly measures inflammatory signaling. Low IL-6 is associated with longevity, preserved muscle mass, and reduced cardiovascular risk.
Symptoms of Low IL-6 (Interleukin-6)
- Low IL-6 is ideal
- Indicates minimal chronic inflammation
Symptoms of High IL-6 (Interleukin-6)
- Chronic fatigue
- Accelerated aging
- Muscle wasting (sarcopenia)
- Insulin resistance
- Depression
- Increased cardiovascular risk
- Cognitive decline
